- Sam's Club positions itself to compete directly with Costco Travel in cruises.
Sam's Club, the warehouse retail chain owned by Walmart, has officially entered the cruise sector by relaunching Sam's Club Travel with a new cruise-booking platform. The move is backed by a strategic partnership with Boundless Labs, a five-year-old cruise-booking technology company founded by experienced online travel executives.
This launch tackles a long-standing hurdle in the travel industry where the vast majority of cruise bookings continue to take place offline through human agents. This reliance on traditional methods stems from the inherent complexity of sailings, ranging from selecting cabin types and meal plans to arranging flights to embarkation ports, hotel stays, transfers, and shore excursions.

Boundless Labs highlights that its technology successfully bridges this digital gap. Across its other partners, such as Kayak and PerkSpot, more than 90% of bookings happen online, driven by features like 72-hour no-payment cabin holds, multi-cabin group bookings, a specialized cabin-recommendation engine, enhanced site speed, and zero booking fees.
"Cruises and experiences are the two holdout sectors where a majority of their bookings still take place offline. The Sam's Club Travel cruise experiment could begin to change that."

Sam's Club's push into cruises places the retailer in direct competition with Costco Travel, which operates its own in-house cruise business generating billions in annual gross bookings. By partnering with Boundless Labs, Sam's Club is leveraging tech-driven curation and loyalty rewards like Sam's Cash to carve out a profitable high-margin segment, separating itself from Walmart's standard Expedia-powered travel portal which does not sell cruises.
Rather than overwhelming users with an endless list of every available option, Sam's Club Travel curates specific itineraries, sailings, and destinations. The platform aims to blend seamless digital self-service tools with expert human customer support to guide members through the traditionally complex booking journey.
