At 3.20 PM on July 31 at Government House, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul spoke to reporters regarding an incident where a patrolling soldier stepped on a landmine in Ban Nong Chan village, Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo province, resulting in severe injuries and the traumatic amputation of his left foot.
Anutin expressed his deep concern and sympathy, stating that security measures must be strictly heightened moving forward. He noted that the personnel carry out their duties out of goodwill and a strong desire to make the area as safe as possible. Sometimes, operational clearances require stepping outside designated paths, and the public must show empathy as these officers make immense sacrifices.
Legacy landmines along Thailand's borders remain a persistent danger stemming from historical conflicts. Demining operations involve extreme hazards, requiring advanced detection technology, specialized training, and robust financial backing to protect frontline personnel from preventable harm.
The Prime Minister emphasized that authorities must take excellent care of the injured personnel and instructed commanding officers to closely supervise every patrol mission. He clarified that this incident was not an attack, but rather an encounter with an old, unmapped legacy landmine of unknown origin, as teams work to clear areas in accordance with bilateral agreements.
