Travis Kalanick, the former CEO and founder of Uber, is making waves in the tech industry once again after his new robotics company, Atoms, secured a massive $1.7 billion in a new funding round led by prominent venture capital firm a16z.
This funding round also saw participation from other investors such as Bain Capital and Fifth Wall, but the most eye-catching detail is Uber's return to invest in Kalanick's company once again, years after he was pressured by the board to step down as CEO in 2017 amid corporate culture and discrimination scandals.
Atoms is actually a holding company rebranded from Cloud Kitchens, the ghost kitchen business Kalanick quietly developed after leaving Uber. Later in March, he announced the rebranding along with the acquisition of Pronto, a heavy industrial automation company founded by Anthony Levandowski, a former colleague from Uber.
