EWE Studio Unveils Exhuma: A Hand-Carved Green Marble Dining Table Paired with a Cast Aluminum Base

Mexico City-based design studio EWE Studio has created a new piece for its Exhuma collection: a 3-meter-long sculptural dining table. This table stands out by pairing a hand-carved green marble tabletop with a base crafted from cast aluminum, exploring the relationship between material culture, craftsmanship, and modern design.
For the creation of the aluminum base, the studio reinterpreted the ancestral sand-casting techniques of the Purépecha people using contemporary materials and craftsmanship, pouring molten metal into hand-shaped sand molds. Following the casting process, the surface is carefully polished while preserving the natural forms created by the metal pouring, resulting in subtle imperfections and manufacturing traces that remain prominently visible.
Sand-casting techniques and metalworking in Purépecha culture historically played significant social, economic, political, and sacred roles, such as in jewelry and ancient weaponry like swords or blades (tajaderos). By applying these traditional techniques to contemporary furniture, EWE Studio reflects the transmission of material wisdom from the Pre-Hispanic era into a design perspective that values physical traces and human involvement in the creative process.
This design focuses on the physical properties of stone and metal, creating a contrast between the refined finish of the hand-carved green marble and the fluid forms of the cast aluminum. The project was photographed by Rosa Peralta and submitted through the reader submission feature on the designboom platform, helping to share this historically resonant design with a global audience.
