Patreon Announces 20% Workforce Reduction, Laying Off 93 Employees in AI Restructuring Effort

Patreon, the popular platform for creators, has announced a 20% reduction in its workforce, resulting in 93 employees losing their jobs. The news was revealed through an internal memo sent by CEO Jack Conte to staff last Thursday.
Jack Conte stated in the memo that Patreon's core business remains strong, but the company needs to adapt to market shifts and stabilize its cost structure. He acknowledged that the decision to cut staff was painful yet critically necessary.
"AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry, though, including how we work, how we build products, how we communicate, and more. That does have an impact on how we operate and organize."

In addition to downsizing the headcount, the company is restructuring its operations by flattening the organizational chart and reorganizing teams to focus on top priorities.
For employees impacted by this round of restructuring, the company will provide support including:
- At least 16 weeks of severance pay
- An additional 1 week of severance pay for every year of service with the company
- Healthcare benefits through the end of the year
- A $1,500 stipend to help secure a replacement laptop for the company-issued computer
Recent layoffs at major tech companies are frequently linked to the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to replace or streamline internal workflows, aiming to cut costs and boost efficiency amidst fierce technology competition and the protection of creators' intellectual property rights from unauthorized AI scraping for model training.
This latest layoff announcement follows closely on the heels of Patreon partnering with internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare the previous week to block AI bots from scraping creators' work to train AI models without permission, as AI scraping issues have grown increasingly complex.
This latest round of layoffs at Patreon is its largest since the company cut 17% of its workforce back in 2022, during which the platform also closed its offices in Berlin and Dublin.
