Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Milan on Tuesday to pay their final respects during the funeral of legendary defender Franco Baresi. The iconic centre-back passed away last week at the age of 66 following a period of ill health.
Regarded widely as one of the greatest defenders to ever play the sport, Baresi captained Milan for 15 stellar seasons, racking up 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals for the Rossoneri.
During his illustrious career, the defender secured 18 trophies with the club, comprising six Serie A titles, three Champions Leagues, four Italian Super Cups, three Uefa Super Cups, and two Club World Cups. He also earned 81 caps for Italy, featuring in the squad that won the 1982 World Cup and captaining the side in the 1984 final which Italy lost to Brazil.

The funeral service was held at Sant'Ambrogio Basilica, drawing club greats and football royalty including Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, Clarence Seedorf, Roberto Baggio, and Alessandro Costacurta. While the current AC Milan squad is away in Australia on a pre-season tour, select first-team players not involved in the trip, such as USA forward Christian Pulisic, were present to honour him.
Franco Baresi's death marks the end of an era for Italian football. AC Milan previously honored his immense legacy by retiring his number six shirt and naming him honorary president in 2020, cementing his status not just as a defensive titan but as the ultimate symbol of club loyalty and leadership.
AC Milan will pay formal tribute to their former captain ahead of their pre-season friendly match against Inter on Wednesday.
