Following four decades of laying digital foundations, Thailand's technology sector is preparing for its next major leap. Dr. Chai Wuttiviwadchai, Executive Director of the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), raised a pivotal question at the press conference for the NECTEC Annual Conference and Exhibition 2026 (NECTEC ACE 2026) regarding the future direction of Thai technology and how all sectors can collaboratively build that future.
Marking its 40th anniversary, NECTEC moved away from focusing on a single industry as it traditionally does, instead reviewing its holistic journey across four major eras spanning roughly a decade each. The first era established critical infrastructure, including the pioneering ThaiSARN education and research network, the Thailand Microelectronics Center (TMEC), and foundational digital technologies from email to early social media.

The second era focused on policy, with NECTEC driving the National Information Technology Plan that eventually led to the establishment of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, managing the Y2K crisis, and spinning off the Hydro-Informatics Institute. The third era brought digital applications directly to the public, featuring notable projects like the Thai School Lunch application used in 35,000 schools nationwide, the TPMAP poverty analysis system, and the Traffy Fondue issue-tracking platform.
Currently housing around 30 laboratories and 8 departments, NECTEC continues to tackle critical challenges such as smart farming, EV charging infrastructure, domestic medical AI models, and large language models tailored for Thailand. Looking 5 to 10 years ahead, Dr. Chai urged stakeholders to explore humanoid robotics, artificial general intelligence, and space communication standards.
NECTEC's 40-year retrospective across four distinct eras clearly illustrates Thailand's digital evolution, transitioning from foundational network cables and policy frameworks to everyday consumer applications and modern artificial intelligence. By setting sights on humanoid robotics and space communications for the next decade, the organization demonstrates a proactive approach in aligning local research with global technological frontiers.
The event also featured a Fire Chat panel discussion titled Beyond Legacy: The Next Chapter of Thai Technology. Siriluck Chuenprasert from Portalnet noted that while AI evolves rapidly, data quality remains paramount under the Garbage in, Garbage out principle. Somboon Anantathanasan from Siemens compared AI's industrial impact to electricity, while Phuchong Charernsuk from AIS highlighted the challenge of secure enterprise AI adoption. Dr. Panita Pongpaibool, Deputy Executive Director of NECTEC, added that Agentic AI could evolve into personal humanoid robots in every home over the next decade.
