Kinzo Proposes 100-Meter Swimming Pool Cutting Through a Public Park in Central Berlin

The Potsdamer Platz district in Berlin, Germany, is set to transform as design studio Kinzo Architekten has unveiled a conceptual renovation project for Tilla-Durieux-Park, a 485-meter sloped park located on the western edge of the famous business district. They aim to repurpose the core of the park into a year-round recreational route by constructing a giant outdoor swimming pool, 15 meters wide and an impressive 100 meters long, stretching out like an urban canal.

Although the Potsdamer Platz area is packed with office buildings and heavy tourist attractions, its ground-level public spaces rarely attract many visitors. The architects leveraged the length and narrow geometric shape of Tilla-Durieux-Park as the core of their design, which features key elements such as:

• A 100-meter outdoor swimming pool with lanes cutting right through the middle of the public park.
• Terraced wooden decking installed on the western side, with changing rooms hidden within the structure.
• A pink walkway winding along the edge of the park, connecting to the sports zone in the southern part.
• A translucent membrane roof stretched over the pool using curved wooden structures during the winter, allowing the pool to be used all year round.
• A wooded zone featuring communal tables for people to gather and engage in activities, which can also host Christmas markets amid the snow.

Additionally, future plans include building a pedestrian bridge to connect Tilla-Durieux-Park with the Landwehr Canal and Park am Gleisdreieck to the south, which will help complete Berlin's north-south green corridor. Although this project is a self-initiated concept by Kinzo without an official commission, this giant swimming pool idea marks a significant effort to draw people back into utilizing this urban green space.
