During his official visit to the Republic of Indonesia from August 3 to 4, 2026, Thailand's Minister of Defense, Gen. Adul Boonthamcharoen, met with Indonesia's Minister of Defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, to foster closer bilateral relations and elevate defense cooperation. Both officials recognized that their strong security partnership, built upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed back in 2015, serves as a solid foundation to be further enhanced through policy-level coordination mechanisms.
Beyond high-level policy discussions, both nations emphasized troop capability development through military education exchanges, joint exercises, and inter-service expert exchanges, with Thailand expressing readiness to expand special operations cooperation in the future. Regionally, Thailand reiterated its commitment to working alongside Indonesia within ASEAN frameworks, including the ADMM and ADMM-Plus, supporting the Trident Resolve exercise, and confirming readiness to participate in joint maritime and air patrols in the strategic Malacca Strait.

Defense industry collaboration between Thailand and Indonesia marks a crucial step toward regional self-reliance in military technology within ASEAN. Thailand's promotion of its AWAV 8x8 amphibious armored vehicles to the Indonesian Marine Corps demonstrates the advancing standard of Thai defense manufacturing and its capability to meet the tactical requirements of neighboring armed forces.
Regarding the defense industry, the Thai defense minister expressed interest in sharing industrial development experiences and formally invited Indonesia to attend the Defense & Security exhibition in Thailand next year (2027). He also proposed that Indonesia consider the Thai-manufactured AWAV 8x8 amphibious armored vehicle for the Indonesian Marine Corps procurement program. Furthermore, addressing the situation in Thailand's southern border provinces, the minister stressed that it is a complex internal affair rather than a religious conflict, seeking continued support from Indonesia via ASEAN, the OIC, and assistance regarding Thai Muslim students.
Finally, both sides exchanged views on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation, where Gen. Adul thanked Indonesia for maintaining neutrality and reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to peaceful resolutions through bilateral mechanisms, international law, and self-defense principles. He called on all parties to maintain the ceasefire, avoid provocations, and accelerate landmine clearance to foster an atmosphere conducive to sustainable peace.
