Microsoft Pressures LG to Stop Annoying McAfee Ads on Windows 11

The annoyance faced by Windows 11 users connecting their computers to LG monitors is finally coming to an end, as Microsoft had to step in directly to put a stop to persistent McAfee trial pop-up windows that kept interrupting users. This move comes after a wave of complaints and criticism from numerous users regarding bloatware bundled with the brand's monitors.

Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's Windows chief, revealed that LG has agreed to immediately disable the McAfee ad pop-ups originating from the LG Monitor App Installer. LG also pledged to continuously improve its systems alongside ecosystem partners to prevent similar issues from happening again.

Previously, Windows 11 users discovered that connecting an LG monitor would trigger a Windows driver update, quietly installing a driver updater and the LG Monitor App Installer in the background without explicit user permission. Reports of this automatic installation issue have surfaced as far back as 2024.

Meanwhile, LG previously stated to Windows Latest that the McAfee antivirus software would not be installed automatically and insisted that explicit user consent is always required. The company claimed that the LG Monitor App Installer went through Microsoft's official software distribution process and did not access or store users' personal data.

However, the practice of forcing software and ads is not unique to LG. Tom Warren from The Verge previously reported that Dell exhibited similar behavior by automatically installing the Alienware Command Center app when connecting Alienware monitors. Coupled with LG's ongoing practice of displaying ads on television screens upon startup, Microsoft's intervention may only serve as a partial solution.
