Newcastle United has completed the signing of young French midfielder Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco for a fee that could rise to £34 million. The 20-year-old flew to Tyneside on Thursday to undergo a medical and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at St James' Park.
Speaking after the move, Aladji Bamba revealed that he was thrilled upon hearing of Newcastle's interest in him. Although he only made his professional debut last season, his standout performances in both Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League immediately caught the eye of the Magpies' scouts.
Bamba's statistical profile in Ligue 1 last season for midfielders with at least 500 minutes played is exceptionally strong, ranking in the top five for several categories:
- 9.1 duels won per game on average
- 3.6 successful tackles per game
- 1.6 successful dribbles past opponents per game
- 1.9 aerial duels won per game
Bamba's arrival reflects a major shift in Newcastle's transfer strategy, pivoting towards targeting Europe's best under-20 prospects rather than spending £55 million on 29-year-old players like Yoane Wissa from Brentford, as they did in the summer transfer window the previous year.
Both Bamba and other new arrivals such as Sean Steer, Even Jouvin, and Basoumana Touré will need time to adapt to the intensity and physical demands of the Premier League, given that Bamba has only started 12 matches in all competitions for Monaco.
The deal was handled seamlessly, with negotiations kept quiet by all parties until news broke of the agreement just as Bamba was traveling to Tyneside. This makes Bamba Newcastle's fourth signing of the summer transfer window, though the club is still looking to add further reinforcements.
