- AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year-over-year in the second quarter.
- Total revenue for the quarter rose 36% to reach $3.6 billion.
- 75% of AI-attributed purchases happened outside the top 100 product categories.
While online publishers continue to grapple with the disruptive impact of AI summaries that eat into click-through rates and advertising revenue, e-commerce software maker Shopify is experiencing quite the opposite effect. The company is finding that artificial intelligence search is actively benefiting its ecosystem rather than replacing traditional search engines.
Shopify reported that traffic and orders originating from AI-powered searches across its merchant stores tripled year-over-year during the second quarter. This growth highlights a stark contrast to the publishing industry, where generative search features have often resulted in measurable drops in web traffic.
The platform's financial performance for the quarter reflected this robust momentum, with revenue climbing 36% to $3.6 billion compared to the previous year, outpacing Wall Street's forecast of $3.4 billion. Meanwhile, gross operating profit increased 31% to $1.71 billion, beating analysts' expectations of $1.63 billion.

Explaining the mechanics behind this success, the company noted that AI's multidimensional search capabilities allow it to surface the best possible products for users, resulting in stronger conversion rates for merchants. Furthermore, 75% of all AI-attributed purchases in the second quarter occurred outside of the platform's top 100 categories, highlighting a unique sweet spot for niche items.
The fact that three-quarters of AI-driven purchases happen outside top product categories demonstrates how conversational and generative search tools excel at uncovering long-tail products. Instead of driving traffic solely to mainstream bestsellers, AI helps buyers discover specialized items from a vast catalog of independent merchants.
In addition to search visibility, Shopify is positioning itself to capture transactions facilitated by AI through its trusted checkout experience. The company has actively built technical connectors to major AI assistants and platforms including Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, Vercel, and vibe-coding platforms like Lovable, giving merchants expansive flexibility to build on the platform.
