Google announces major AI leadership shakeup with Demis Hassabis and Jeff Dean changes

The tech giant is implementing significant changes within its core artificial intelligence leadership, introducing a reshuffled organizational chart announced by CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday.
Under the new structure, Demis Hassabis will transition from leading Google DeepMind directly to serving as the chair of Google DeepMind and the chief scientist at Alphabet. He will maintain his leadership at Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery AI subsidiary. Meanwhile, Koray Kavukcuoglu, who previously served as DeepMind's CTO, is advancing to senior vice president of DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai while keeping his responsibilities as Google's chief AI architect.

In a communication directed to staff members, Hassabis emphasized that artificial intelligence must demonstrate undeniable value to society by tackling major health challenges. He also noted that he will continue collaborating closely with Sundar Pichai regarding global and strategic AGI matters while advising Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind executives.

In another major departure, long-time Googler Jeff Dean—who served as Google DeepMind's chief scientist and held the distinction of being Google's 30th employee—is leaving alongside Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat. The pair is establishing a new AI-focused public benefit corporation named Discovery Loop, with Pichai confirming that Google will participate as a founding investor.
This high-level reorganization highlights how major technology firms are redistributing top talent to focus on specialized scientific breakthroughs and independent ventures. By shifting Hassabis toward overarching scientific strategy and Alphabet-level roles, Google creates room for operational leaders to manage core architectures while enabling foundational researchers to pursue targeted external applications through new collaborative entities.
According to its official website, Discovery Loop aims to build automated machine learning, science, and engineering solutions designed to accelerate research velocity and deliver technological benefits on a global scale.
