A retro concept rooted in the perspective of Benjamin Franklin 240 years ago has once again become a subject of debate in modern space affairs, as the new top executive of the U.S. Space Force has expressed opposition to the idea of granting private entities the right to operate as armed mercenaries or privateers beyond Earth.
Although space travel technology and the growth of commercial industries have advanced rapidly, maintaining security and safety in orbit still relies heavily on state mechanisms and strict control under international law. Opening the door to non-state armed forces could create geopolitical complexities and increase the risk of future conflicts.
