Thai PM Highlights SMEs as Economic Backbone, Pledges Full Support

On August 7 at the Grand Ballroom on the 2nd floor of the Millennium Hilton Bangkok Hotel, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul served as the chairman of the 18th National SME Awards and the 4th SME Provincial Champion Awards for the year 2026. The event was attended by cabinet ministers, executives from the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP), SME operators, and business sector representatives.
Before the official ceremony commenced, all attendees observed a moment of silence to pay their respects and express condolences to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother and Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati.
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) form the foundation of Thailand's economy, driving the majority of employment across various sectors. Continuous recognition programs like the provincial championships help establish high management standards and prepare local businesses for global market competition.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana revealed that the Prime Minister noted how SMEs act as crucial drivers of the country's economy, showing remarkable adaptability in the fast-paced modern economic era where new business opportunities emerge alongside shifting challenges.
The Prime Minister stressed that business adaptation is essential for survival, and the government is committed to upgrading Thai SMEs through several key areas:
- Increasing productivity and adding value through innovation
- Enhancing access to financial sources and broader markets
- Integrating businesses into domestic and international value and supply chains
