Scotland closing in on head coach to replace Clarke

The Scottish Football Association is rapidly closing in on the appointment of a brand new head coach to succeed Steve Clarke, who stepped down after a seven-year tenure. Clarke had originally signed a fresh four-year deal back in May, but chose to resign in the wake of Scotland's disappointing group-stage exit at the World Cup this summer.
The search for the vacant managerial post is being spearheaded by chief executive Ian Maxwell alongside Craig Mulholland, who took over as the SFA's chief football officer in May. Reports indicate that both officials have held discussions with a wide array of managerial candidates hailing from both the United Kingdom and international locations.
Transitioning to a new managerial setup right before a crucial block of UEFA Nations League fixtures places immense pressure on the SFA leadership. The incoming boss will need to implement their football philosophy rapidly, especially with a difficult away fixture waiting just around the corner.
Interviews have already been fully conducted, and the governing body is now reaching the final stages of making an official appointment. However, it remains entirely unclear at this point whether the incoming head coach will be a native Scot or a foreign manager.

Meanwhile, Steven Naismith, who previously served as Clarke's trusted assistant, stated last month that he fully anticipates remaining within the national team setup under the guidance of the incoming boss.
Scotland are scheduled to return to competitive action in the Nations League with a demanding block of four fixtures, kicking off with an away match against Slovenia on 26 September.
