UK approves new weight loss pill Foundayo by Eli Lilly

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in the UK has approved Foundayo, a daily weight-loss pill created by pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly, making the nation the very first in Europe to authorize the treatment. The medication is specifically designed for managing obesity alongside type 2 diabetes.

Although individuals will be able to purchase the drug privately through a prescription, the regulatory greenlight does not automatically guarantee that it will be immediately accessible on the National Health Service.

Foundayo operates as a form of GLP-1 medication designed to blunt appetite, following closely behind the MHRA's approval of an oral version of Wegovy back in June. Eli Lilly noted that while the drug can straightaway be utilized by the NHS for type 2 diabetes patients, it still needs to submit an application to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in England to secure a recommendation for weight-loss therapies.

Dr Simon Cork from Anglia Ruskin University pointed out that although the weight-reducing benefits of Foundayo might trail behind alternative treatments, patients can still anticipate clinically meaningful shifts in their body weight. He also highlighted that a primary advantage lies in its expected lower cost compared to rival treatments that face rigid NHS restrictions.

Echoing these sentiments, University of Glasgow expert Prof Naveed Sattar called the approval good news. He emphasized convenience as another core benefit, noting that unlike the Wegovy pill which demands administration on an empty stomach, this tablet can be taken flexibly at any hour of the day.

Furthermore, medical experts believe the tablet could assist individuals transitioning off weight-loss injections in maintaining their reduced weight. Clinical trials demonstrated that patients who previously utilized weight-loss jabs and subsequently took the tablet—also known as orforglipron—daily for a full year successfully prevented significant weight regain, a prevalent hazard when discontinuing GLP-1 injections. Patients utilizing the drug are still strongly advised to maintain a nutritious diet and engage in regular exercise. Naturally, much like any pharmacological treatment, Foundayo carries potential side effects including nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting.
