- Tripadvisor to make Viator and experiences bookable on Airbnb later this year.
- Airbnb shifts away from its strictly organic, bespoke approach to experiences.
- A May 2025 relaunch scaled to 3,000 landmarks before narrowing focus to Paris.
- The move mirrors Booking.com's earlier pivot toward third-party partnerships.
The online travel industry is witnessing a major strategic pivot as Tripadvisor announced on Tuesday that a selection of tours, activities, and attractions from its Viator and Tripadvisor experiences brands will become bookable on Airbnb later this year. For a struggling Tripadvisor, this agreement represents a major distribution win, adding to its existing distribution partnerships with industry giants like Booking.com and Expedia.
For Airbnb, the deal marks a decisive break from its historical playbook. Ever since launching experiences over a decade ago, the company steadfastly attempted to scale the business organically, emphasizing bespoke, locally-hosted offerings that fit the unique Airbnb brand without relying on major partnerships or corporate acquisitions. Industry observers long noted that Airbnb was never going to be able to truly scale its experiences segment without pursuing massive external collaborations.
This partnership highlights the inherent challenges accommodations platforms face when trying to build ancillary travel services entirely from scratch. By bringing in established inventory from Viator, Airbnb is effectively pivoting toward a more mainstream aggregation model. While this helps bypass the slow growth of organic scaling, it also forces the company to reconcile mainstream third-party listings with its original branding of locally-hosted unique offerings—a strategic path previously walked by competitors like Booking.com.

Back in May 2025, Airbnb executed a notable relaunch of the feature, expanding the offering into roughly 3,000 landmark experiences across about 100 cities, all curated "the Airbnb way" through local guides. However, the company subsequently narrowed its operational focus, concentrating heavily on perfecting the core product experience within the city of Paris alone.
Ultimately, the Tripadvisor agreement signals that Airbnb leadership recognizes the necessity of going mainstream to achieve true business scale. Even so, questions continue to linger regarding whether everyday consumers broadly associate Airbnb with anything beyond residential home rentals.
