  • Spotify is launching a new badge to highlight artists generated by artificial intelligence.
  • AI-generated artists will be excluded from personalized recommendations unless followed.
  • The company will review suspected accounts and allow creators to appeal decisions.

As synthetic audio continues to infiltrate mainstream streaming libraries, music platform Spotify is taking a proactive step to address listener concerns by introducing a dedicated feature to highlight artists created entirely through artificial intelligence.

The presence of automated and machine-generated music has long been a source of frustration for platform users. In one notable past instance, a disgruntled listener found their personal playlists increasingly populated with suspected AI tracks and took matters into their own hands by building a custom tool to automatically label and block them.

Extending transparency measures from individual tracks to full artist profiles marks a crucial shift for streaming services. As generative audio tools become more sophisticated, distinguishing between human creators and synthetic personas is vital for maintaining trust and fair compensation within the digital music ecosystem.

Announcing the updates, the company emphasized that a genuine connection between creators and their audiences must rely firmly on authenticity and trust. In the realm of recorded music, this means listeners deserve absolute certainty regarding the real identity of the performers they support.

"In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are"

Under the new system, the dedicated badge will be prominently displayed on the banner and biography sections of artist profiles. Listeners will also encounter a distinct notification whenever these profiles appear in search results or across playlist tracks. Crucially, Spotify confirmed that creators bearing this badge will be automatically excluded from users' personalized music recommendations unless the listener already follows them directly.

Currently, musicians can already declare their use of automated production systems voluntarily through the AI Credits feature, with the platform receiving tens of thousands of submissions on a daily basis.

While Spotify hopes creators will self-disclose proactively, platform moderators will also actively review accounts that match specific criteria. Accounts subsequently tagged with the AI Persona badge by the streaming service will be granted an opportunity either to self-disclose or formally appeal the designation. Furthermore, the badge itself will explicitly indicate whether the artist was transparent from the outset or if the label was applied following a formal platform review.
