Brazil's data protection authority, known as ANPD, has issued a directive forcing the popular chat platform Discord to suspend its livestreaming capabilities across the country. This regulatory action follows a tragic incident where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly coerced and pressured by other participants to take her own life during a broadcast on the platform. The formal investigation into the matter was officially launched by the agency on August 7 following the young victim's passing.
A spokesperson for Discord addressed the situation by stating that groups or individuals promoting or encouraging violence are strictly unwelcome on the platform. The company noted that they swiftly investigated and shut down the private, invite-only server involved shortly after its creation, and they continue maintaining active cooperation with law enforcement agencies regarding the ongoing criminal investigation. Reports indicate that five teenagers have already been arrested in connection with the tragic death.
According to information reported by Reuters, the ANPD discovered that Discord lacked real-time access capabilities to livestream content, a technical limitation that prevented automated detection of guideline violations. The service, accessible via desktop and mobile applications, boasts a massive user base of over 200 million monthly active users and holds high popularity among gaming communities worldwide.

Discord has been given a strict three-day window to comply with the suspension mandate, alongside the right to appeal the decision within 10 business days. The tech platform faces steep potential financial penalties of up to 50 million reais, equivalent to approximately 9.67 million US dollars, for every individual violation. The ANPD clarified that the suspension will remain fully enforced until Discord can conclusively prove the implementation of adequate protective safeguards for minors, which may incorporate mandatory age verification protocols.
This regulatory crackdown mirrors Brazil's aggressive stance on holding major tech companies accountable within its borders, reminiscent of the high-profile ban imposed on the social media platform X in August 2024. In that case, X was blocked nationwide after failing to pay accumulated fines and meet Supreme Court deadlines to appoint a local legal representative. X was subsequently reinstated in October 2024 after settling total fines amounting to 28 million reais and agreeing to local legal compliance, demonstrating Brazil's uncompromising enforcement of national digital regulations.
