Meta has narrowly avoided a courtroom showdown after a 15-year-old from Florida, legally identified as R.K.C., decided to drop a lawsuit accusing the social media platform of designing features that make teens addicted and cause harm. This development came less than a week before Meta's attorneys were scheduled to head back to a Los Angeles state court.
Previously, R.K.C. reached out-of-court settlement agreements with other social media providers, namely TikTok, Snap, and YouTube, for undisclosed amounts. Plaintiff attorneys Emily Jeffcott and Rahul Ravipudi released a statement explaining that given the largely successful outcomes of the proceedings and concerns about facing a difficult, weeks-long trial, the plaintiff chose to drop the claims against Meta to put the matter behind her and focus on physical and mental recovery, as well as therapy to return to a normal life.
