For Ben Ferrick, the latter was enough to spark his latest creation. His Day Display, crafted under the appropriately named Stupid Engineering, is a wall-mounted object that answers one extremely basic question: what day is it?

Made from precision-milled and bent 2 mm aluminum, the display strips the calendar down to seven interchangeable day cards and a compact wall mount. There is no screen, no app, no synchronization, and, crucially, nothing particularly clever happening behind the scenes. Ferrick describes it as a deliberately straightforward answer to a mundane problem, maintaining a deadpan restraint rather than genuine silliness.

Its form is blunt and slightly brutalist, with the bent sheet metal doing almost all of the visual work. Ferrick studied industrial design in Wellington and has spent the last six years working as a digital manufacturer specializing in CNC machining. The project began during downtime at his day job, when he started setting himself the challenge of making attractive, easily manufacturable objects that solve functions in the simplest possible way. His first cardholder, for example, borrowed the spring from a clothes peg on his washing line.

The Day Display emerged from that same instinct during a holiday break, when Ferrick repeatedly lost track of the weekday once work stopped providing its usual structure. Rather than solving the problem digitally, he made it physical. The result sits somewhere between calendar, sign, and private joke: rigorously manufactured, almost comically obvious, and perhaps more useful than it has any right to be.
