During Wednesday's Made by Google event, the tech giant made numerous hardware announcements, including the Pixel 11 series, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Pixel Tag, and the Galaxy Watch 5. However, hardware wasn't the only highlight of the day, as Google also introduced several notable software capabilities designed to improve daily usability across the ecosystem.
Among the software updates, one standout addition for Android users is the Tap to Share feature. True to its name, Google explains that users simply need to place their compatible Android device near another compatible Android device to automatically pull up each other's contact cards, offering a hassle-free method to exchange phone numbers and email addresses.
This proximity-based sharing approach is reminiscent of Android Beam, a discontinued feature that utilized NFC technology to transfer data. The introduction of Tap to Share serves as a modern evolution of that concept, bringing a streamlined sharing experience to Android that mirrors features like Apple's iOS NameDrop.
The functionality extends far beyond digital business cards, allowing users to share media files as well. The workflow to transfer photos and videos includes the following steps:
- Open the desired photo, video, or file on your Android smartphone.
- Launch the system Share Sheet menu.
- Bring your device close to the other user's compatible smartphone.
- Android will automatically transmit the file instead of your standard contact card.

While unveiled alongside the Pixel 11 lineup, Google confirmed broad compatibility for the new tool. Tap to Share will work on the Pixel 6 and newer models spanning the company's supported hardware. Furthermore, Google stated the feature is arriving on select Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Fold 8, and Flip 8, with wider device expansion scheduled before the end of 2026.
