Apple has reportedly trained a custom artificial intelligence model for the Chinese market alongside domestic tech giant Alibaba, marking a rare cross-border partnership that cuts across growing geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing.
According to Reuters, which cited three unnamed sources familiar with the matter, the China-focused large language model was developed in collaboration with Alibaba and trained utilizing the company's direct support.

Developing a proprietary model represents a notable shift from Apple's historical strategy in the region. Previously, the company relied on pre-existing domestic Chinese models to power generative AI features on devices sold locally, as American models like OpenAI's ChatGPT are unavailable. Building its own model grants Apple enhanced product control within China's fiercely competitive smartphone sector.
This development highlights the complex regulatory hurdles American tech firms face in navigating Beijing's strict compliance landscape. In China, all artificial intelligence models must undergo official government registration and clearance prior to public release. Securing this approval would position Apple as the first US company permitted to offer its own proprietary AI model in the country.
The report emerges as Apple prepares to deploy Apple Intelligence within China. Insiders told Reuters that the rollout is anticipated in the coming months following an upcoming iOS software update. Last month, Apple officially registered its on-device generative AI service with China's cyberspace regulator, successfully clearing a major regulatory barrier for the device release.
