Firefighters battled intensely against a massive wildfire sweeping through Belgium's largest nature reserve on Saturday, marking what local officials described as the country's worst blazes in recent history. The fire, which has been burning since Friday, has already consumed one-third of the High Fens park, prompting urgent warnings that the flames could reach residential areas.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of two nearby villages and opened a local gymnasium to shelter displaced residents. Firefighting efforts faced severe hurdles due to unfavourable weather conditions and the park's challenging terrain, which consists of bog-like territory, moorland, and dense forests. Officials noted that crews had to allow certain parts of the heathland to burn because the areas were entirely inaccessible.

In response to the escalating crisis, Belgium activated the European Union's civil protection mechanism to secure international reinforcements. European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib confirmed that two Swedish water-bombing aircraft, along with a helicopter each from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, were deployed to assist ground crews working near the eastern border with Germany.
This severe wildfire outbreak underscores the escalating impact of extreme climate patterns across Europe. The European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that western Europe experienced its hottest June-to-July period on record, creating tinderbox conditions that have fueled devastating blazes not only in Belgium but also across France, Croatia, Spain, and Serbia.
Gregory Melotte, a firefighter battling the inferno, described the volatile conditions to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, highlighting the constant threat posed by shifting weather patterns while crews worked to protect surrounding fir forests.

Meanwhile, the crisis extended beyond Belgian borders as 650 residents were forced to evacuate in Landes, south-western France, where a forest fire initially started on Thursday and reignited on Saturday. More than 500 firefighters were deployed to tackle that blaze, highlighting a continent-wide struggle against extreme summer wildfires.
