On August 17, 2026, at 09:30 AM at Government House, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) Yossanan Wongsuwan addressed reports that the United States government plans to require allied nations to choose a side in the artificial intelligence (AI) technology competition against China. He noted that AI involves various sectors, such as semiconductors, which have already been under discussion.
Reflecting on his participation in the World Internet Conference (WIC) in China, Yossanan noted that while attending such summits may be necessary, Thailand must carefully evaluate certain aspects. To secure the greatest advantage, he emphasized that Thailand must position itself as a neutral country, allowing the nation to navigate different angles effectively. Consequently, he will discuss the matter with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to determine the appropriate stance.
Navigating the technological divide between global superpowers like the US and China is a critical diplomatic challenge for emerging economies. Because AI value chains span advanced semiconductors to vast data ecosystems, adopting a neutral stance helps mitigate geopolitical risks while preserving access to diverse technological advancements and preventing economic isolation.
When asked if choosing a side is necessary, Yossanan reiterated that the ultimate priority is strengthening domestic foundations so the country can withstand rejections and maintain self-reliance. Over the past two to three months, discussions with nations such as France, Japan, and South Korea have focused on solidifying Thailand's foundational capabilities to prevent continuous external bargaining pressure.

Addressing the pressure from global superpowers, Yossanan emphasized that fundamental knowledge in science and technology is crucial. Serious investment must occur not just in AI, but across underlying data layers and cybersecurity. While the government cannot act alone and requires private sector collaboration, the state will initiate operations in high-risk areas before handing over commercial applications to businesses.
