Sonos app adds Live Activities support for iPhone lockscreen

Sonos system users on iOS devices can now enjoy improved convenience as the latest mobile app update introduces support for Apple's Live Activities, bringing quick playback controls directly to the iPhone lockscreen without needing to fully open the app.
This long-awaited addition follows a tease by company CEO Tom Conrad during an interview with Bloomberg last February. Sonos highlighted in a Reddit post that the functionality is a much-requested and essential feature for its user base.
The introduction of Live Activities represents a strategic move by Sonos to rebuild user satisfaction following the backlash over a major app overhaul in 2024. By setting the feature to off by default, Sonos gives users complete control over when and how they adopt the new lockscreen integration.
Despite the useful upgrade, certain limitations remain. Features like album art are currently omitted, and the Live Activity appears only after initiating playback and closing the app, displaying the active room name and track title before disappearing automatically 15 minutes after playback stops.

Additionally, while support extends to Apple Watch and CarPlay for displaying status, direct controls on those secondary screens are not yet supported. Sonos noted that its team is continuing to work on improvements and exploring alternative ways to enhance the lockscreen experience.
