According to data provided by Downdetector, the hosting provider accumulated over 15,000 user reports signaling service disruptions—a significant jump from the roughly 3,000 reports logged when the issue first broke. Whether you are a developer attempting to update your repository or a general user trying to visit a page, the platform likely caused significant friction.

The company officially acknowledged the disruption through multiple status page updates. In an update published at 12:36 p.m. ET, GitHub confirmed they had addressed the root of the problem, stating that they identified the problematic component and took corrective actions, showing strong signs of recovery while continuing to work toward complete service restoration with slightly elevated error rates.

Prior to that update, at 12:16 a.m. ET, GitHub detailed the severity of the incident by revealing that web experiences and API traffic faced high error rates of around 20%. Meanwhile, archive downloads and raw repository content downloads suffered an approximate 50% error rate. Authentication services including SAML and OIDC, alongside SCIM and Team Sync, were also heavily impacted while engineers worked to uncover the root cause.

User feedback on Downdetector suggests that service hiccups are not entirely unfamiliar to regular visitors. One frustrated user commented that the recurring technical hurdles were becoming wearisome, while scrolling through historical logs revealed sporadic error reports occurring once or twice a week throughout August.
