However, the positive start was immediately dampened when Joe Gomez, who started the match as both centre-back and captain, suffered an injury and had to be substituted in just the eighth minute.
With Virgil van Dijk granted extended leave following the World Cup with the Netherlands, and Giovanni Leoni still completing individual rehabilitation from a severe ACL tear, the defensive responsibilities fell heavily on two 18-year-old debutants. Mor Talla N'diaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe both performed admirably until they were substituted in the 68th minute, though neither is expected to hold a regular starting spot just yet.

Sunderland had earlier leveled through Enzo le Fee before Timur Tutierov put them ahead, but Dominik Szoboszlai—wearing the armband after entering at half-time—equalized with a stunning long-range strike from outside the box. Harvey Elliott, making his first appearance back following a loan spell at Aston Villa, provided the assist for 19-year-old Kieran Morrison to score Liverpool's opener. Later in the match, fan favourite Federico Chiesa converted from a Calvin Ramsay cross, and 16-year-old substitute Josh Abe helped set up Lewis Koumas for the final goal.
Iraola's inaugural pre-season match in the US highlighted both the attacking depth and the defensive vulnerabilities that require urgent attention. Conceding two soft goals where opponents found too much space to shoot demonstrates that the pressing structures and defensive solidity are still works in progress. The arrival of high-profile additions like Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Ryan Gravenberch in Chicago will undoubtedly inject further quality as preparations continue.
Iraola and his squad head back to their Chicago base with a victory under their belt, preparing to face Wrexham in New York on Thursday, while Sunderland prepares to take on Leeds in New Jersey.
