For as long as anyone can remember, GitHub has stood as the go-to code host for the vast majority of software developers. However, recent struggles with service reliability and performance degradation have left many users frustrated, opening the door for ambitious competitors to step in.
The AI startup, which is now officially part of SpaceX, launched a new platform named Origin designed to handle all core developer tasks typically managed on GitHub. These features include collaborative codebase editing, repository storage, and pulling requests from other contributors looking to merge their work.
Interestingly, utilizing Origin does not require developers to abandon GitHub entirely. The platform is intentionally built to operate alongside GitHub, allowing teams to pass code back and forth between the two services in an interoperable manner.
The debut of Origin coincided with growing backlash over perceived reliability dips at GitHub. Coincidentally, on the very same day Cursor unveiled its platform, GitHub suffered a massive worldwide outage that lasted over six hours, crippling core functions and generating an error rate of nearly 20% globally.
Cursor's expansion into code hosting highlights how AI-driven development tools are evolving into comprehensive ecosystems. By offering seamless interoperability rather than forcing a painful migration, Cursor has removed a major friction point for developers looking to diversify their hosting infrastructure.
Despite these strategic moves, challenging the established market leader remains a monumental task. According to internal metrics, GitHub boasts roughly 180 million active developers. Founded in 2007 and subsequently acquired by Microsoft in 2012, it remains the largest source-code repository host in the world.
