  • Searchable analyzed over 11,000 ads inside real ChatGPT chats from July 4 to Aug 4, 2026.
  • Found that 33% of ads had no connection to the ongoing conversation.
  • Only 27% were a direct match to the specific product requested.
  • 68% appeared in chats where users showed zero intent to buy anything.

Advertising inside ChatGPT arrived with a promise that the AI assistant already understands user intent. However, recent data has revealed a significant gap between that initial promise and current reality.

Searchable, an AI visibility platform, examined more than 11,000 ads served during actual ChatGPT conversations between July 4 and August 4, 2026. Every ad was paired with its corresponding chat thread and graded based on how closely the advertised item matched the user's queries.

After evaluating each ad across three distinct relevancy tiers, researchers discovered that one-third, or 33%, were entirely unrelated, bearing zero connection to the user's discussion.

Just over a quarter, 27%, achieved a direct match by promoting the exact product requested. Meanwhile, the largest segment at 40% fell into the contextual match category, linking to topics raised earlier in the thread rather than the immediate question.

The high rate of misfired ads highlights the fundamental architectural difference between traditional paid search and AI-driven platforms. While paid search relies on explicit keywords chosen by advertisers to signal buyer intent, ChatGPT ad systems operate on context hints. Advertisers describe desired conversation scenarios, which OpenAI matches against live chats where users routinely write, study, troubleshoot, and solve problems rather than just shop.

Furthermore, the study revealed that more than two-thirds, or 68%, of ads appeared in conversation threads where users showed no indication of wanting to buy, book, hire, or compare products at any point.

"The rate at which users dismiss ads inside ChatGPT has fallen by half since the advertising business launched in February, and the company treats dismissals as its proxy for relevance."

JP Garbaccio, Head of AEO and SEO at Searchable, noted that a placement inside an assistant cannot substitute for being the actual answer. Misplaced ads are routinely scrolled past, whereas organic AI recommendations continue to convert at higher rates than traditional channels.
