Yotsanan Meets Northern Governors for Flood Response

On August 20, Yotsanan Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, as well as Chairman of the Committee for Flood and Drought Prevention in the Northern Region, traveled to Nan province to monitor ongoing flooding. He convened an urgent meeting with all northern provincial governors to prepare for incoming massive water volumes following severe floods and mudslides in areas such as Sukhothai, Mae Hong Son, and Phrae.
The meeting gathered key officials, including Jesadat Thaiset, Deputy Minister of Interior; Chainarong Wongyai, Governor of Nan province; and Teerapat Kachmat, Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, alongside governors representing every northern province.
Establishing a single-command War Room during flood crises serves as a critical mechanism to centralize authority and eliminate bureaucratic delays between local and central agencies. Given the northern region's mountainous terrain and susceptibility to mudslides, rapid communication channels and private sector partnerships are vital to reaching isolated communities effectively.

During the session, Yotsanan stressed the necessity of close monitoring and advance warning systems so residents in vulnerable zones can evacuate promptly. The meeting concluded with five urgent directives for all northern provinces to execute:
- Single Command War Room: Establish a centralized command center in every province directed by the governor.
- Equipment Readiness: Prepare water pumps, vehicles, and rescue gear for immediate deployment.
- Warning Systems and Evacuation Plans: Set up alert systems and conduct evacuation drills in high-risk areas.
- Personnel Standby: Keep officers on standby for round-the-clock operations.
- Real-Time Reporting: Report emergency incidents directly and immediately to the Deputy Prime Minister, Ministry of Interior, and DDPM.
Additionally, two complementary approaches were introduced: collaborating with the private sector to mobilize resources and integrating support from external agencies to ensure comprehensive relief and recovery efforts.
