Modern home network management goes beyond a single connection point, as dividing wireless traffic into multiple segments is a crucial cybersecurity best practice. A router can be configured to provide four completely separate wireless networks, tailoring each segment to specific device categories while maximizing overall digital safety.
The primary network is designated as HomeNet_Main, used by personal devices such PCs, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones to securely access the internet. It features Band Steering enabled to share a single SSID name across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency bands. Additionally, the SSID is hidden as a cybersecurity precaution so it remains invisible to nearby scanners, utilizing WPA2/WPA3-Personal authentication.
The second network, HomeNet_Guest, provides internet access for visitors while remaining completely segregated from the primary network so guest activities cannot interfere with personal devices. It features Band Steering enabled with a visible SSID, alongside WPA2/WPA3-Personal authentication standards.

Segmenting a home Wi-Fi network into isolated zones is an effective security practice that limits the blast radius if an IoT device is compromised, ensuring that private personal data remains shielded from potential network intrusions.
For Internet of Things devices, a separate HomeNet_SmartDevices network isolates smart gadgets to contain any malware-induced behavior within its own boundary. This network disables Band Steering, utilizing only the 2.4 GHz band for older compatibility, hides the SSID, and enforces MAC filtering to restrict access strictly to pre-approved device addresses under WPA2/WPA3-Personal encryption.
The final network is HomeNet_HVAC, dedicated to connecting two smart thermostats for climate control management. While these thermostats can operate locally via built-in screens, internet connection enables remote app management and automatic firmware updates. Isolated from the main network, it operates solely on the 2.4 GHz band, hides its SSID, and utilizes MAC filtering with WPA2/WPA3-Personal authentication.
