Expedia Group has eliminated several senior leadership roles and reallocated responsibilities to accelerate product and technology development. The company is actively reshaping its corporate structure to anchor operations around artificial intelligence, moving away from traditional management layers toward a more agile framework.
According to an internal memo obtained by GeekWire, Sachin Singh, senior vice president of book-to-trip technology, along with seven other vice presidents overseeing payments, fraud and risk, and self-service tools, are departing the company. Their operational duties will be absorbed by remaining technology executives, the chief information security officer, and the finance department.

The scale of the affected division is substantial. In its most recent annual report, Expedia reported that roughly half of its 16,000 global workforce operates within technology roles, translating to an 8,000-person Product and Technology group. Previous company estimates indicate that approximately 5,000 of those employees are software engineers.
Chief Product Officer Shilpa Ranganathan and Chief Technology Officer Ramana Thumu framed the sweeping organizational changes as a necessary reaction to rapid technological shifts, noting that emerging tools have compressed traditional development timelines.

Expedia's structural overhaul highlights a broader industry shift where legacy travel platforms are streamlining management to speed up innovation cycles. By replacing traditional coordinating executives with autonomous, brand-embedded product squads, the company aims to eliminate bureaucratic delays. However, decentralizing product ownership while centralizing core AI platforms requires careful balancing to prevent infrastructure fragmentation across different consumer and B2B subsidiaries.
Under the new architecture, core artificial intelligence, data systems, and agentic platforms are centralized under Chief AI and Data Officer Xavier Amatriain. Simultaneously, customer relationship management and payment operations have been migrated from Marketing into the Product and Technology division. Despite the executive layoffs, Expedia continues aggressive recruitment efforts for specialized AI and full-stack engineering talent.
