Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his spouse arrived at Government House in Wellington at 10:00 a.m. local time on August 21, 2026, to receive an official welcome ceremony according to traditional Māori customs. The warm and cordial atmosphere reflected the enduring friendship between Thailand and New Zealand as both nations celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.
During the welcoming ceremony, the Governor-General, Māori elders, and a senior Māori woman greeted the Thai Prime Minister with the traditional hongi greeting. This was followed by the wero challenge ceremony where a Māori warrior placed a carved artifact on the ground to test the visitors' peaceful intentions, followed by the karanga welcoming call and the powerful haka performance. Prime Minister Anutin later met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to inspect the guard of honor before proceeding to bilateral discussions.
Following both small-group and plenary discussions, the two leaders held a joint press conference outlining the future direction of bilateral ties under the newly elevated Strategic Partnership. The cooperation will be driven by the Thailand-New Zealand Joint Plan of Action 2026–2030, which focuses on four core pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and innovation collaboration, education and cultural exchanges, and regional and multilateral cooperation.

The elevation of relations to a Strategic Partnership marks a pivotal geopolitical and economic milestone between Thailand and New Zealand. By implementing the four-pillar Joint Plan of Action, both countries aim to deepen trade and investment ties with a clear horizon toward 2045, while jointly addressing contemporary regional security challenges such as transnational crime and online scams through enhanced law enforcement cooperation under multilateral frameworks like ASEAN and APEC.
On the economic front, both sides agreed to triple bilateral trade to USD 7.5 billion by 2045 and committed to developing a closer economic partnership agreement. Furthermore, leading Thai business executives accompanying the delegation engaged with New Zealand counterparts to explore new collaborative sectors such as green economics, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy, fostering stronger commercial ties.

Conclude the official visit, both Prime Ministers signed the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership between the Kingdom of Thailand and New Zealand and witnessed the signing of four cooperation documents. These included a cultural cooperation agreement, a memorandum of understanding between the Office of the Civil Service Commission and Education New Zealand, a police cooperation agreement between the Royal Thai Police and New Zealand Police, and a private sector agreement between Chata Instruments and Aeroqual Limited, demonstrating a firm commitment to tangible cooperation across all dimensions.
