In the era of advanced large language models, users face a fundamental question regarding how much control they are willing to surrender to an AI over their digital lives. Maximizing value from these models requires granting them access to system controls. While control freaks or AI-hesitant users might find this daunting, Andrew Ambrosino, lead engineer for OpenAI’s desktop app, views it as the only way to test the future.
Ambrosino's desktop application currently accesses and controls his inbox, Slack account, phone, and productivity applications such as Notion and Figma. He works on ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's major bet released last month on the company's lowest subscription tier priced at 20 dollars per month. The product aims to let white-collar workers deploy AI agents to handle digital workflows for accountants, investors, doctors, and other computer-driven daily routines.

OpenAI's marketing objective centers on artificial intelligence extending beyond question-answering to help turn big ideas into reality. While this shift has already occurred for software developers, its spread to other departments has been slow. ChatGPT Work is a modified version of the company's Codex coding tool, designed to provide non-engineers with agent functionalities that complete multistep projects independently.
Behind the concept of AI agents lies the software harness surrounding LLMs, which determines what information the model observes and which tools it utilizes. Adapting these engineering tools for mainstream non-technical users requires intuitive user interfaces and clear discoverability features to reach a billion users.
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI's core product work including Work, told TechCrunch that ChatGPT Work can execute complex tasks autonomously in a delightful and secure manner, fulfilling OpenAI's mission to bring everyone along. Commercially, longer-running agents consume more tokens, making them more lucrative per user as AI labs seek to justify massive investments in training and computation.

OpenAI's non-engineering personnel, such as communications and finance teams, initially adopted Codex when the interface presented technical readouts. The team worked from February onward to generalize the tool for everyday use, pitching it as ideal for routine, data-intensive coordination tasks like generating weekly metrics reports.
