The braking issues are not limited strictly to electric vehicles. The scope also extends to several non-EV models in the automaker's lineup, including the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Buick Enclave, and Envision, putting a potential total of more than 1 million vehicles under review.

Highlighting the severity of the malfunction, a report filed with NHTSA by the driver of a 2025 Lyriq detailed how they completely lost their brakes while attempting to pull into a storefront parking space. The vehicle surged over the curb, smashed through the front of the store, and came to a stop midway inside amidst the structure and furniture.
Federal investigations of this scale by safety regulators like NHTSA often precede major vehicle recalls, especially when complaints span multiple vehicle platforms—both electric and internal combustion engines. As automakers rapidly transition toward electrification and software-defined braking systems, hardware or software glitches in regenerative braking integration can present significant safety challenges that draw immediate regulatory oversight.
