Six twentysomethings in East London have established what they describe as the antithesis of a San Francisco hacker house. Rowan Aldean, 26, explained that the primary objective is a holistic improvement in life, steering clear of the typical 12-week countdown to a Demo Day.
A TechCrunch reporter spent an afternoon touring the six-story waterfront building known formally as the London Island Founder House, or Lift House. Aldean and his 22-year-old wife Zahraa, an upcoming pharmaceutical research PhD candidate, have lived there since May, following its official launch in March. Aldean sold his previous company for millions last year and now runs an applied AI startup that assists businesses in deploying agents.
Operating as a hybrid of startup workspace and co-living environment, Lift House derives its name from both the elevator in the building and its core mission to uplift technology founders. It stands as one of the very few co-living hacker houses in London, contrasting sharply with San Francisco where countless similar houses are scattered across the city.
The emergence of hacker houses in London highlights the rapid maturation of the UK technology ecosystem, particularly within artificial intelligence. Attracting billions in venture capital and drawing talent from pioneers like DeepMind, London's tech scene is forging a distinct path focused on sustainable innovation rather than Silicon Valley burnout culture.

Lift House operates on the bet that UK founders can scale successful companies without emulating the relentless hustle culture prevalent in Silicon Valley. Founders have recounted tales of San Francisco hacker houses operating illegally in warehouses, hosting extravagant galas, or enforcing punishing 72-hour work sprints.

Aldean pointed to DeepMind, one of London's most successful AI firms, noting they have secured Nobel prizes and built frontier innovations without unnecessary spectacle.
The house aligns with a broader trend dubbed Londonmaxxing, where founders optimize the London tech ecosystem. According to Dealroom data, London AI startups have pulled in $12 billion out of $14.7 billion total startup funding in 2026, with six companies securing over $500 million each, including Wayve, Superintelligence, ElevenLabs, Recursive, Ineffable Intelligence, and Isomorphic Labs.
Residency terms at Lift House remain flexible, ranging from one month to six months or more. Residents purchase their own groceries, share cooking duties, and split housekeeping tasks while keeping their rent details private.
