TOBI: A tiny keychain cyber friend for fortunes

Industrial designer YuJung Jung has conceived TOBI, a keyring-sized electronic gadget inspired by the familiar appeal of horoscopes and tarot card readings. By moving this experience away from smartphones, the device provides a dedicated physical form where each message arrives at random. Users power on the device by holding the upper-right button for two seconds, triggering a greeting sequence followed by an encouraging fortune.

Jung describes the concept as a 'cyber friend,' giving the miniature hardware the feel of a character rather than a generic piece of technology. The polycarbonate matte-coated body measures 58 by 47 by 25 millimeters and comes in green and blue versions. Its proportions were refined through repeated sketches to balance the relationship between the screen and casing, landing somewhere between an electronic tool and a small companion.

Unlike a phone that pulls users into endless scrolling apps, TOBI is designed for a much shorter and finite conversation. A single press produces a single sentence on its compact display, allowing the message to linger without opening into further content. Hanging beside keys or clipping onto a bag, the device turns digital fortune-telling into a tactile accessory that travels naturally among everyday pocket items.
