The underlying software also powered alternative access sites like XCancel, letting individuals browse X feeds directly. Following earlier platform restrictions, operators of Nitter instances previously had to link their setups to legitimate X accounts as documented on GitHub, allowing development to resume and instances to return online.

This time, however, X is pursuing legal channels to dismantle Nitter and its network of instances entirely. The official Nitter website confirmed that the main project is currently offline while its creator seeks legal guidance. The developer, known by the handle Zedeus, informed TechCrunch via email that secondary instances received identical legal demands.
On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project’s repository.
