Multi-billionaire Elon Musk's rocket enterprise, SpaceX, has announced plans to construct its largest launch site to date in the southern US state of Louisiana. The massive project, carrying a price tag of $100bn or roughly £73bn, has been officially named Starbase, Louisiana.
Construction on the expansive 125,000-acre, or 50,585-hectare, project is scheduled to kick off next year, expanding the aerospace company's operational footprint beyond its current headquarters in Texas and existing facilities in Florida. The firm stated that the site will be utilized to support thousands of Starship flights annually, facilitating missions bound for Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and deep space destinations.

SpaceX outlined its timeline by stating that it aims to execute the inaugural Starship flight from the newly established Louisiana base by the year 2029. Furthermore, the company reported that the facility will inject more than 3,000 direct jobs into the local workforce.
According to the Louisiana Economic Development agency, average remuneration for personnel at the facility—touted as the largest of its kind globally—will outpace the region's current baseline salary average by 192%. The agency has additionally estimated that the complex will spur the creation of over 8,100 indirect employment opportunities.
"The historic project will establish Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, with the capacity and infrastructure needed to dramatically increase launch frequency and expand access to space."

This colossal infrastructure expansion by SpaceX underscores the company's aggressive strategy to build heavy-lift transport capabilities capable of sustaining high-frequency orbital and interplanetary travel. Siting the facility in Louisiana leverages coastal access, which is crucial for transporting gargantuan rocket components via water barges—avoiding the logistical bottlenecks associated with highway transport across state lines.
The Louisiana facility shares its moniker with another prominent SpaceX outpost located on the southern tip of Texas. Back in 2025, residents residing in a designated sector of Cameron County, where the aerospace firm conducts pivotal testing and development activities, voted in favor of officially incorporating the tract of land into a municipality dubbed Starbase.
