Former England and Feyenoord winger Raheem Sterling is set to appear in court next month to face criminal charges of dangerous driving and the possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation. The charges stem from an incident on the morning of Thursday, May 28, 2026, when his Lamborghini crashed into motorway barriers on the M3.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary released an official statement confirming that the single-vehicle collision occurred on the southbound M3 near the Minley Interchange in Hampshire. Authorities verified that no other vehicles were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported at the scene.
In addition to dangerous driving and holding nitrous oxide, the 31-year-old from Berkshire has been charged with failing to provide a specimen. Although police initially suspected the driver of operating a vehicle while unfit through drugs, that specific suspicion was not pursued in the formal charges. A source close to the player stated back in May that there was no proof of drugs in his system.
The legal scrutiny surrounding nitrous oxide possession and driving offenses in the United Kingdom has intensified significantly under recent legislative updates. For a high-profile athlete whose career has recently faced turbulent transitions, this legal development marks another challenging chapter away from the pitch.
Sterling has remained without a club since leaving Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord at the conclusion of last season. He had initially moved to the Netherlands in February on a short-term contract following his departure from Chelsea by mutual consent.
Before his stint abroad, Chelsea paid £47.5 million to sign Sterling from Manchester City in 2022, where he secured four Premier League titles, five League Cups, and one FA Cup across seven successful years. On the international stage, Sterling earned 82 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, featuring in three World Cups and two European Championships. He is due to answer the current charges at Basingstoke magistrates court on September 15, 2026.
