Google is altering the layout of its search engine results page by automatically expanding AI-generated summaries at the very top for specific queries. As initially highlighted by Search Engine Roundtable, this update replaces the previous approach where users had to manually click a show more button to view the complete AI overview.
This layout shift forces the conventional list of web links much farther down the page. Instead of seeing a partial overview, users are greeted with a full AI Overview, followed by a follow-up search box, and then the organic search links. Consequently, users now have to perform significantly more scrolling to browse standard web results.

The exact criteria Google uses to determine which queries trigger the auto-expanding AI Overviews remain ambiguous. Prior to reporting, tech journalist Jay Peters observed the behavior across most test queries, though it later reverted to showing only initial summary snippets with a button. Even specific test phrases yielded inconsistent results across different web browsers.
This adjustment in how AI Overviews behave underscores Google's ongoing strategy to position artificial intelligence at the forefront of information retrieval. While publishers continue to monitor how AI-generated summaries impact referral traffic to external websites, Google remains focused on streamlining the immediate answer-seeking experience. Measures such as canceling auto-expansion during active scrolling reflect an effort to prevent user disruption while integrating conversational search features.

Furthermore, Kutz addressed potential user experience friction by pointing out that if users have already begun scrolling down to view content located beneath the AI Overview, the system actively cancels the expansion to ensure individuals do not lose their current reading position on the page.
