Tottenham endured a difficult campaign last year, finishing 17th in the Premier League for the second consecutive season and narrowly escaping relegation on the final day. The turmoil was underscored by three managerial changes throughout the campaign, with Thomas Frank lasting less than eight months before being sacked following a dismal start. Interim manager Igor Tudor then departed after just 44 days before De Zerbi took over with seven matches remaining.

Following that turbulent period, Spurs have backed De Zerbi with a club-record £237m outlay in the summer transfer market. Earlier in the month, the north London club broke their transfer record twice in the space of two days, initially signing midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m before securing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100m.
In addition to those blockbuster deals, Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke joined from Brighton in a £52m transfer alongside experienced free-agent acquisitions Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, and Martin Dubravka, significantly strengthening the squad's depth.

Van de Ven, who is currently in discussions over a new contract after joining from Wolfsburg on a six-year deal in 2023, expressed strong confidence in De Zerbi's methods. He noted that the manager has instilled much-needed passion and intensity into the group, aided by a full pre-season to integrate the new arrivals.
