The transfer window is heating up dramatically as Manchester City have initiated formal talks with Liverpool over the potential signing of attacker Cody Gakpo. The future of the Netherlands forward has quickly emerged as one of the major storylines heading into the final three days before the window shuts on Tuesday.
Sources indicate that the 27-year-old has attracted concrete interest from both Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, with City being Gakpo's preferred destination should he depart Anfield prior to the Tuesday deadline. City made formal contact with Liverpool regarding a deal on Saturday evening.
This potential departure comes in the wake of Liverpool agreeing a deal worth up to £123m for Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. With the arrival of Victor Munoz and the emergence of Rio Ngumoha, Gakpo is well aware he may no longer be a guaranteed first choice. Nevertheless, Liverpool prefer to secure another forward before sanctioning his exit, having shown interest in Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr.

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has netted 33 goals across 91 Premier League appearances, adding a goal and an assist in his first two games this season. Financially, commanding a fee of around £85m would represent excellent business after signing him for £35m, though the long-term absence of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak's fitness struggles mean letting him leave carries considerable sporting risk.
