Court Grants 100k Bail to ‘Tawan’ with Travel Ban

On August 31, 2026, at the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, a verdict reading was held for black case number Or 1237/2565, filed by the public prosecutor of Criminal Court Division 5 against Ms. Tantawan Tuatulanon, or Tawan, a former core leader of the Thalu Wang group, as the defendant facing charges under Article 112 of the Criminal Code, Section 14 of the Computer Crime Act, resisting officials using physical force, and failing to comply with official orders.
This legal proceeding stemmed from an incident in March 2022 when Ms. Tantawan went to live-stream via Facebook on the footpath along Ratchadamnoen Nok Road, directly opposite the United Nations (UN) office, shortly before a royal motorcade passed by. Throughout the trial proceedings, the defendant consistently entered a plea of not guilty.

Cases involving Article 112 and political activism in Thailand frequently spark intense debates regarding bail rights and pre-trial detention conditions. Courts typically evaluate the severity of the circumstances and financial sureties when granting temporary release, while travel restrictions are routinely implemented to ensure defendants remain within jurisdiction during the appeals process.
During the ruling, the Criminal Court judged Ms. Tantawan guilty of defaming and threatening the monarchy under Article 112 of the Criminal Code, sentencing her to 3 years imprisonment. Additionally, for the charge of knowingly disobeying official orders, the court imposed a fine of 900 baht.
Nevertheless, the court took into consideration that the defendant's testimony during the trial proved somewhat beneficial, providing grounds for sentence mitigation. Consequently, the court reduced the sentence by one-third, resulting in a finalized prison term of 2 years. Following the verdict, a request for temporary release was submitted, and the Criminal Court approved her bail set at 100,000 baht, alongside the mandatory condition forbidding her from traveling abroad.
