Former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has surprised political observers by announcing his resignation as a Member of Parliament, choosing to step down in order to dedicate his efforts to international affairs. The announcement arrived just hours before his successor, Andy Burnham, made his debut appearance in the House of Commons.
The move will immediately trigger a by-election for the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras, a safe seat for the Labour Party which Starmer has proudly represented since 2015. Having left Downing Street in July following pressure from party MPs, Starmer had initially indicated he would remain in Parliament until the next scheduled UK general election in 2029.
In a statement given to the Camden New Journal, Starmer described his 11-year tenure representing the London constituency as a tremendous privilege.
