Lucas Museum of Narrative Art 2026: Los Angeles Landmark

Construction has surged ahead at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, gearing up for its official public opening on September 22, 2026, within Exposition Park. Envisioned by filmmaker and museum curator George Lucas, the futuristic civic landmark has been designed by the renowned architectural firm MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong. The building takes the form of a sculptural canopy that hovers lightly above a revitalized, pedestrian-friendly parkland.

Breaking away from conventional forms, the MAD team replaced right angles with fluid, organic geometries. The building's sculptural facade is crafted from over 1,500 uniquely molded fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) panels, creating a cloud-like massing with deep cantilevers. A 56-meter-long central archway spans a public plaza to form the main entry point, while a four-story elliptical oculus cuts through the volume to visually connect the park and the sky.

Landscape architects Mia Lehrer and Studio-MLA transformed former asphalt parking lots into an 11-acre shaded oasis of gardens flowing beneath and onto the museum roof. The campus features native drought-tolerant planting, rain-capturing landforms, and renewable cooling water features. Solar panels share the upper surface with trees and low plantings, turning the roof into an extension of the surrounding landscape.

Spanning five stories, the institution houses 100,000 square feet of galleries, two cinematic theaters, a library, education spaces, and a rooftop venue. Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the museum's opening exhibitions will feature over 1,200 objects across more than 30 galleries, ranging from fine art by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera to comics by Jack Kirby and cinematic props from the Lucas Archives.
