Rome Urges Prison Aid for Detainee Fhalikit

On September 2, 2026, at the Thai Parliament, Mr. Rangsiman Rome, a party-list MP, deputy leader of the People's Party, and chairman of the House Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice and Human Rights, received a formal complaint from Ms. Khumklao Songsomboon, a staff lawyer and litigation manager at Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.
The petition requested the committee to investigate Thanyaburi District Prison for allegedly failing to transfer Mr. Promsorn or Fhalikit Veerathamjari, a former activist from the Ratsadon Mutelu group and an Article 112 political prisoner, to an external hospital for medical treatment.

Ms. Khumklao stated that Fhalikit sought legal assistance and began refusing food and water on July 1 as a peaceful form of protest to demand bail rights for political prisoners charged under Article 112 of the Criminal Code.
These political detainees were reportedly excluded from the benefits of the amnesty law that previously came into effect, raising deep concerns as his physical health deteriorated rapidly due to the prolonged protest.
Hunger strikes inside correctional facilities represent extreme forms of protest that place immense pressure on state agencies due to the severe health risks involved. Drawing lessons from previous tragedies involving political prisoners in Thailand, human rights advocates and the public closely monitor institutional responses to prevent fatal outcomes.

Mr. Rangsiman Rome acknowledged the petition and pledged to urgently coordinate with the Department of Corrections and Thanyaburi District Prison to verify the facts and ensure immediate medical attention and safety for the detainee.
