Tensions had already been running high among fans, particularly over a controversial proposed sale of academy youngster Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest, which was eventually blocked by the board following toxic fan reaction. However, the boiling point arrived on deadline day when US striker Folarin Balogun's proposed £40m move from AS Monaco descended into farce during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The deal hit multiple roadblocks, including flight delays, document holdups from Monaco, and complications during the player's medical examinations. Although both clubs restructured the payment terms before the deadline, Balogun ultimately chose to walk away from the Finch Farm training base without signing, reportedly feeling uncomfortable with how Everton handled his medical process.
The failed pursuit compounded a difficult period that saw striker Beto depart for Fiorentina for £15.5m and star player Iliman Ndiaye complete a £65m move to Manchester City. While Everton secured loan returns for Jack Grealish and signed Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon for £3m, the overarching verdict on the window has been one of severe embarrassment.
